Artist Statement:
The components of my jewelry are made by hand using a Propane- oxygen torch, rods of soda lime glass and dichroic glass. I seek out  color schemes and surface qualities that are both mysterious and  unusual in order to define the wearer. By layering hot glass in different colors and opacities I experiment with complex surface treatments and iridescent textures. Much of my work in glass is informed by the images of my experience traveling in Asia, Africa, and Central America.

BIO
Residing in Charleston, SC with her husband, Kate lived in the Kalahari desert for two years as an Art Teacher with the U.S. Peace Corps. She traveled extensively throughout Botswana, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Uganda, India, Nepal, and more recently Central America. Kate studied at the George Eastman Museum of Photography, received an undergraduate degree from University of Florida, and a Masters from Rochester Institute of Technology. Primarily self-taught, Kate came to lampwork glass bead making after taking jewelry design courses at Chautauqua Institution and Penland School of Crafts. While serving in the Peace Corps Kate was first influenced by the fresh, resourceful approach to function and design. Currently, Kate’s work can be found in books, galleries, private collections, and fine craft shows nationwide.
